Lang Lang's Book - Journey of a Thousand Miles - My Story

Sunday, September 06, 2009

I recently bought a copy of Lang Lang's book "Journey of a Thousand Miles - My Story". It sat on my coffee table for a couple of days before I had a chance to peruse it. So, last night, I went to bed around midnight and took the book with me . . . big mistake!!! My intention was to read the first two or three Chapters . . . wrong!!! It was so enthralling I couldn't put it down and ended up reading the book cover to cover straight off, which meant I didn't lay my head to rest until 5 am!!

The Moon is Chasing the Clouds

I can't stand music that has no melody. But because it was Lang Lang, I went to the concert to suffer through Prokofiev. Just not my thing. Yeah, he was perfect and technically correct and dramatic but that little song that he dedicated to those of us who have come to Ravinia year after year to hear him (and to stand in long lines to get his autograph and a photo) was the best thing of the whole night.

When he came out on stage with a microphone I thought YIKES!! Hope he isn't going to sing!

Spending Time in Europe

Hello again everyone. I'm in Europe now and so far I'm having a blast. I had a wonderful time in Milan where I made my debut recital at La Scala. I also recorded for the movie "Shanghai". In my spare time, I walked around the city and saw all kinds of cool stores of famous fashion brands. Right now I'm enjoying myself off of the coast of Sweden in the islands and performing more concerts. I can't wait to go to Vienna on my birthday to go to my friend Dominik's wedding!

Rome

At the moment, I am in the beautiful city of Rome, Italy. I am working with Cecilia Bartoli (what an amazing voice!) and playing chamber music here. I especially love sightseeing in the city here – it’s like magic!

Rubbing Shoulders in D.C.

I flew out to Washington, D.C. last week for a Memorial Day concert with PBS. Katharine McPhee and the National Symphony Orchestra also performed. I had an amazing time! I ran into some celebrities like Tom Cruise and his lovely wife, Katie Holmes. I even got to meet General Colin Powell!

Home with the Family

Well, I finally was able to spend some quality time at home with my family in New York after travelling so much! I was able to enjoy a wonderful home-cooked meal from my mother (thanks mom!) and relax. I rested up and then I was off again to D.C.!

Performance with the MET Orchestra at Carnegie Hall

At Carnegie Hall, I performed Brahms Piano Concerto # 1 with Maestro Levine and the MET Opera Orchestra in New York two Saturdays ago. It was really fun! There was a CD and book signing right afterwards. Thanks to everyone for coming out to see it!

first movements of two Beethoven sonatas

and am currently polishing:
Brahms A Major Intermezzo
Schumann 'Kinderszenen'

(PS: even sight-reading, you can't help but feel the raw power and emotion in Beethoven's music...)
