Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Piano Trios' 5 STARTS
Lang Lang, Piano;
Vadim Repin, Violin;
Mischa Maisky, Cello.
There is a notable history of virtuosos joining to play chamber music, from Alfred Cortot, Jacques Thibaud and Pau Casals in the 1930s, to Vladimir Horowitz, Isaac Stern and Mstislav Rostropovich at the "Concert of the Century" at Carnegie Hall in 1976. The results are often more alert and nervous than those of a long-standing ensemble: The players don't know what to expect. Here, Lang Lang is on his best behavior for two Russian piano trios, and the Tchaikovsky proves the composer could have been a major composer of chamber music, like Brahms or Dvorak. This is music-making on the highest level.
