Review on Lang Lang recital at National Concert Hall in Zurich
HAVING performed in front of an international audience of more than five billion people at the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing, Chinese pianist Lang Lang enjoys almost pop-idol levels of adulation and his performance at the National Concert Hall justifies this unusual acclaim.
His programme separates sonatas by Beethoven and Prokofiev with part of Albeniz’ evocative “Iberia”.

Rachmaninoff & Tchaikovsky Piano Trio
When famous soloists play chamber music together, the result can be a battle of egos or the creation of a whole greater than its parts. On this recording, in performances of two romantic Russian works ideally suited to their temperaments, three superstar virtuosos succeed in merging without submerging their over-life-size personalities. They could hardly be more different. Maisky, aged 61, born in Latvia, is a musical and political iconoclast and veteran chamber musician. Repin, 38, is one of the Siberian prodigies who took the world by storm some decades ago.

Lang Lang Effect
This was a magnificent inauguration of Chopin Year. Lang Lang, one of the greatest world pianists, performed in Warsaw Philharmonic.
Friday evening was opened with Andante spianato and Grand Polonaise in e flat major op. 22. In the introduction, the Chinese pianist felt into reverie, treating, with rightness, andante as a nocturne. Afterwards, with an energy that is typical of him, he played polonaise. It was stunning although it was a specific kind of a walked dance. However, the performance of Concerto in e minor was perfect.

Brilliant Pianist Did Not Deepen the Secrets of Polonaises and Mazurkas
Lang Lang gave an evidence of stunning virtuosity and intelligence. Moreover, he resigned from a spectacular show.
If Lang Lang’s Warsaw concert had been limited to those few minutes of the middle Larghetto of the Concerto in f minor, the audience would still have left the concert hall having unforgotten experience. That is because the music was flying lightly in the air: performed in a delicate manner, full of poetry and sweetness mixed with nostalgia. This was a creation of the highest quality, the absolute top of the piano world.
